INTERDIVISIONAL CUP
Three Brothers captures title
In a replay of last fall’s Interdivisional Cup Final, Three Brothers SC reversed its fortune defeating Columbia Select SC 1-0 on Sunday, July 9 at Cedar Lane Park in Columbia. With the victory, Three Brothers captured the Mid-Maryland Interdivisional Cup for the fifth time.
Columbia
Select controlled play early and nearly took the lead when Chris Love unleashed
a blistering shot that was tipped just wide by Three Brothers’ goalkeeper
Chris O’Leary. On the 14th
minute, Three Brothers scored against the run of play when Steve Knapman carried
the ball down right wing and drew Columbia goalkeeper Brian Boussy out of the
net before delivering a cross. Nino Marcantonio outfought a Columbia defender
for the ball and poked it into the left corner.
After
Marcantonio’s goal, Columbia Select continued to play its possession game but
was kept off balance by the constant threat of quick counters.
Marcantonio missed on four counterattacks in the second half. Three
Brothers’ defenders Maurizillo Castillo, Chris Serrano and Tim Esposito helped
O’ Leary earn the shutout.
Three
Brothers defeated Starliners 3-0 and Lone Star 1-0 to advance to the title game
while Columbia Select earned its shot at the championship with impressive 5-1
and 2-0 wins over Brookland United and Shooting Stars.
Columbia has taken home the Cup three times, the last three fall seasons. Three Brothers last won the Cup in the spring season of 1998.
