2010 MARYLAND CUPS SUMMARY

Stewart Cup - First Round
10 January - Woodbine, Maryland

Stewart Cup

Rowland Cup Next

The cold air did not dampen the first round. (11 January) Like the mailman, neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail could stop the first round of the Stewart Cup.  The snow melted off the field and despite the chill, we got all the games played.  Mundo Tir Na Nog, Christos FC, Jilly's Bar & Grill, Baltimore Bays Chelsea, Select FC Magicmen and Portside Tavern FC all advanced to the quarterfinal round, which will be played in two weeks.

We will play the Rowland Cup this Sunday at Western Regional Park.  Take note that starting times have been moved up one hour and the first match time is at 11:00.

Rowland Cup - First Round
17 January - Woodbine, Maryland

1st Round Complete

Stewart Cup Quarterfinals Next

Like a Broadway play, the show must go on. (18 January) It was cold, wet and pretty much miserable during some portions of the games but we got the first round complete in the Rowland Cup.  Kudos to the players, coaches, referees and spectators that put up with the weather.  And let's not forget Cup Chairman Fran McGrath who spent the entire day on the fields.  Congratulations to Jilly's Bar & Grill, FC Allyance, Mundo Tir Na Nog, Christos FC, Baltimore Bays Chelsea and Select FC Magicmen as they advanced to the quarterfinal round.

On the plate this Sunday is the quarterfinals of the Stewart Cup.  We will be at Western Regional Park again kicking off at 11:00.

And then we start play with the national cups. (26 January) The weather has not been too kind to us this January but we have been able to stay on schedule.  Another round complete, this time the quarterfinals of the Stewart Cup.  Portside Tavern FC, Jilly's Bar & Grill, Baltimore Bays Chelsea and Christos FC are the final four.  Three of these teams look to repeat their success this weekend in the Rowland Cup as we will play those quarterfinal rounds.  Be there this Sunday, start time is 11:00 at Western Regional Park.

Snow Forces Cancellation

Matches to be scheduled for a later date. (30 January) We pushed through the month as much as possible but finally have succumbed to the weather.  The quarterfinal rounds scheduled for Sunday, 31 January, have been postponed and will be played at a later date.  Next Sunday, we will go forward with the US Open Cup at Western Regional Park beginning at 11:00.

Snow, Snow Go Away

Weather Creates Schedule Changes

Open & Amateur Cups pushed back one week. (8 February) The forecast is not looking to good for this weekend but we have rescheduled the Open Cup quarterfinal round that was to be played this past weekend to the next.  That moves the Amateur Cup round to the following week.  If the snow melts, then head out to Western Regional Park beginning at 11:00.  The links to the schedules are listed below and will be updated as necessary.

Enough Already

Record Snow Fall Causes Delays

Open Cup to be played on the 28th. (11 February) There's no business when snow business interferes with cup business we know! Perhaps a bad attempt at humor but what else do we have?  The record snow fall that has hit our area has put the cup schedule to a standstill as games will not be played this weekend.  We will continue with the scheduled Amateur Cup matches for 21 February and try to get these rounds of the Open Cup on the 28th.  The links to the schedules are listed below and will be updated as necessary.

Snow Capped Fields

No Games this Weekend

The Open Cup should go on for the 28th. (19 February) The weather forecast looks favorable for next week and spring is around the corner despite what the groundhog thinks.  Cup Commissioner Fran McGrath has a plan in place to get the postponed games played.  There will some matches scheduled on Tuesday evening in mid-March.  So next Sunday, we have the Open Cup and one Amateur Cup match.  Then we rotate weekends with the Amateur Cup and back to the Open Cup along with the midweek state cup matches.

US Open Cup - Quarterfinal Round
28 February - Bel Air, Maryland

Games Get Played

Open Cup Quarterfinals

Jilly's Bar & Grill and FC Allyance advance.  (1 March) After a long layoff due to record snow fall, we finally took the pitch with two Open Cup matches.  The first one featured AEK Baltimore against Jilly's Bar & Grill, which ended 10-0 in favor of Jilly's.  Brian Walter put in a hat trick and Chris Hastings scored twice.  The second game was similar as FC Allyance trounced MD Kicks 7-0 behind a pair of braces from Billy Reinhardt and Eddie Emokpae.  The two sides advance to the semifinals with Jilly's meeting against Christo's FC while Allyance awaits the match between Charm City FC and Baltimore Bays Chelsea.

We are still juggling schedules as we did not get the remaining quarterfinal played on Sunday due to field conditions.  On tap for this weekend is the Amateur Cup and hopefully the last quarterfinal game for the Open Cup.  We will the update the site once the schedule is worked out.

The Bays then went ahead with a lazer shot from Chris Ports 15 minutes into the second half.  Tim Lane scored the eventual game winner at the 76th minute.  Christos fought back but a last minute goal from Mike Joseph was not enough.

Bays Make it a Double

Late Goal Seals 4-3 Victory

Defeat over Charm City give Bays open title.  (19 April) The Baltimore Bays Chelsea did a state double, winning both the Stewart and Rowland Cups.  Last week, they defeated Christos FC for the Stewart Cup.  This week, a goal with 3 minutes left in the match earned them the Rowland Cup over Charm City FC.  The Rowland Cup is Maryland's open competition that was first played in 1914.  It was a back and forth match with Charm City taking the early lead with a forceful penalty conversion by Will Beckman.  Mikael Tigrett evened it up putting away a through ball sent to him.  Chris Ports put the Bays ahead but Lou Brunetti tied it up again before the half.  In the second half, BJ Quigley put the Bays on top but Brunetti tied it again when he headed in a cross from Tarik Walker.  It looked as if the match would go into penalty rounds but Quigley intercepted a pass and fed Ports for the game winner.

The Bays and Charm City will play in the US Amateur Cup next Sunday.  Charm City travels to Philadelphia to meet VE Majors of Eastern Pennsylvania.  The Bays host Partizan of DC/Virginia.

The Region I qualifiers of the US Over-30 Cup was not kind to Maryland teams.  Mundo/Tir Na Nog were shut out by United FC of DC/Virginia 6-0.  Christos FC were short on their comeback, losing to Radnor Elite of Eastern Pennsylvania 4-3.
